Multilingual Learners

In the Ross Valley School District, we believe multilingualism is a superpower.
Knowing more than one language enhances memory, strengthens problem-solving skills, and fosters social and cultural understanding. It also helps build meaningful connections with people from diverse backgrounds. We are proud of our multilingual students and deeply value all that they contribute to our learning community.
Each of our five sites has a dedicated English language development teacher who works with students and supports their language development. Sites also hold events to support our multilingual families and celebrate student progress.
Students whose primary language is not English take the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) each year to measure growth in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Based on these results, students receive Designated English Language Development (ELD) instruction—targeted support that builds academic language and confidence.
As students reach English proficiency, they go through the reclassification process, celebrating their achievement as they transition out of ELD services. Even after reclassification, they continue to thrive as bilingual or multilingual learners, contributing their unique strengths to our schools and community.
